Mandela Day - 18 July

Nelson Mandela International day (Mandela day) is celebrated on 18 July of every year on his birthday and it was officially declared by United Nations in 2009. This day is a global call for each and every individual to serve social justice through community service. Its main objective is to bring together people to fight poverty, promote peace and reconciliation. The campaign message says

Nelson Mandela is the South Africa's first black president and regarded as founding father of country's multi-racial democracy. He is South African anti-apartheid revolutionary and served as president from 1994 to 1999. He spent a total of 27 years in various prisons, 67 years fighting against apartheid. He was married thrice and has six children. In 2004 he retired and retreated from public life. He was honored with many awards around the world. Few of them are

  • Joint Nobel peace prize with de Klerk in 1993.
  • US Presidential Medal of Freedom.

Nelson Mandela who turned 95 this July has been hospitalized since last 45 days due to recurring infection in lungs in Pretoria. His descendants were involved in intra-family legal dispute relating to the burial place of Mandela's deceased children, and ultimately Mandela himself.
